As a maps, outdoor activities lover and developer, I always wondered how maps (and specially vector maps) were created. I also always needed contours elevation while hiking, running etc. to use on my phone or my Garmin GPS.

I work a lot with mapbox SDK on mobile, so I know quite well vector tiles, and the environment (style etc.).

Thanks to OpenMapTiles project, I played a little bit with their Docker toolchain and I felt I could use it to create contours vector tiles. I created a fork.

I also found phyghtmap tool to fetch SRTM files and create elevation profiles into an OSM pbf file.

By combining all those tools in one, a single command line can brings to you contours mbtiles useful to add to your own vector tiles.

Every technical details on my Github: https://github.com/RomainQuidet/openmaptiles

Enjoy!
